Dichroic means "two colors"
Dichroic glass is a specialty engineered glass whose apparent color changes with viewing angle and light source due to precise thin-film interference coatings. Extremely thin layers (often tens to hundreds of nanometers) of metal oxides — such as titanium, silicon, or magnesium oxides, sometimes combined with precious metals — are deposited onto clear or colored glass in a vacuum chamber. Light interacting with these multilayer films is selectively transmitted and reflected at different wavelengths, producing vivid, iridescent shifts and a high degree of spectral separation not achievable with conventional pigments.
The result is a striking, dynamic material that can appear to glow, flash complementary colors, or present different hues from front and back. Dichroic glass is prized for its optical purity, strong color saturation, and surface sheen; it is used in fine art and sculpture, high-end jewelry, architectural accents, stage lighting optics, and precision scientific/optical components.
True dichroic glass is relatively scarce compared with ordinary glass. Scarcity arises from the specialized manufacturing: vacuum deposition requires costly coating equipment, tight process control at the nanometer scale, and skilled operators. Production yields can be limited (coating defects, warping, or delamination can render sheets unusable), inventory of consistent batches is small, and few suppliers produce high-quality, stable coatings. Additionally, popular color variants and unique custom coatings are often made in small runs, increasing lead times and price. Because the effect is a function of exact layer composition and thickness, reproducing a given look reliably is nontrivial, contributing to its premium positioning.
Carefully handled, dichroic glass retains its optical qualities for many years; however, surfaces can be sensitive to harsh abrasives or certain chemicals that may damage the coating. These optical and production constraints explain both its desirability and its limited availability in the marketplace.
